# Prompt

> Set your assistant's name, first message, and instructions. Generate a prompt with AI, structure it into sections, import facts from your website, and translate it.

The **Prompt** tab defines who your assistant is and how it behaves on every conversation.

![Prompt tab](https://mintcdn.com/oratoinc/4kqJqYTkP_RSjHT3/images/app/assistant-prompt.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=4kqJqYTkP_RSjHT3\&q=85\&s=78c862462cd8fc0a6a111ac539f8e726)

## Agent name

The name your assistant uses, for example `Priya` or `Sales Bot`. Callers may hear it, so pick something that fits your brand.

## First message

What the assistant says when the conversation starts. It's optional: leave it blank and the assistant opens based on its instructions.

Use `{{customer_name}}` (double braces) to insert the lead's name:

```text theme={null}
Hi {{customer_name}}, this is Priya calling from Acme Realty. Do you have two minutes?
```

> [!NOTE]
>
> The first message is spoken only if the agent speaks first. You can change this under **Who speaks first?** on the [Settings](/assistants/settings#how-sessions-start) tab.

## Generate & refine

Let Orato write the instructions for you.

**1. Choose a conversation style**

| Style | Best for | How it behaves |
| - | - | - |
| **Follow my steps** | Surveys and confirmations | Asks steps in a fixed order |
| **Chat naturally** | Sales and enquiries | Answers anything and covers topics in any order |

**2. Describe your agent**

Write a short description in the box, for example:

```text theme={null}
Outbound assistant for a Mumbai real estate agency. Qualify leads on budget,
location, and timeline, then offer a site visit.
```

**3. Click Generate**

Orato writes structured instructions into the **Instructions** field.

**4. Refine**

Once a prompt exists, the box changes to **Add follow-ups or refinements**. Type a change, such as `Ask for their email before ending the call`, and click **Update**. Click **View full prompt** to see the complete result.

## Import from website

Click **Import from website** and enter your site URL. Orato imports the pages into your [knowledge base](/knowledge-base), then lets you confirm the business facts to use in the prompt. This is the fastest way to give a new assistant accurate details about your company.

## Instructions

The main prompt. Write it yourself, generate it, or start from a [template](/assistant-templates).

Two shortcuts make writing faster:

| Shortcut | What it does |
| - | - |
| `/` at the start of a line | Inserts a section heading |
| `@` | Inserts the `{{customer_name}}` variable or a tool name |

![Section menu opened with the slash shortcut](https://mintcdn.com/oratoinc/4kqJqYTkP_RSjHT3/images/app/assistant-sections.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=4kqJqYTkP_RSjHT3\&q=85\&s=2cce326dc8eecadae6de366806d531e1)

### Sections

| Section | Use it for |
| - | - |
| **Identity** | Who the agent is and who they represent |
| **Objective** | What the call should achieve |
| **Speaking style** | Tone and turn length for voice |
| **Guardrails** | Hard rules the agent must follow |
| **Steps** | The call flow |
| **Error handling** | What to do when the caller is confused, silent, or off topic |
| **Context** | Background the agent should know |

See the [Prompting guide](/prompting-guide) for what to put in each section.

## Translate prompt

Click **Translate prompt** at the bottom of the editor to translate your instructions into the language your callers use. Voice and speech recognition work best when the instructions match the call language.

* **Hindi** output uses Devanagari script with natural spoken phrasing. Common call terms stay familiar, either transliterated (for example प्रोफाइल, कैलेंडर) or in English where people say them that way.
* **Regional languages** follow the same approach: native script, spoken tone, and loanwords only where callers actually use them.
* Placeholders such as `{customer_name}`, `{date}`, and `{time}` are never translated.
* Your section structure (headings, numbered rules, examples) is kept exactly.

See [Multilingual assistants](/multilingual) for more.
