# Multilingual assistants

> Serve callers in Hindi, Indian English, and regional languages like Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, and Bengali.

Orato is built for multilingual markets like India. An assistant can start in one language and follow the caller if they switch.

## Supported languages

Choose the **Primary language** on the [Voice](/assistants/voice-and-language#languages) tab. Options include English (US), English (India), Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, and Bengali.

## Set up a multilingual assistant

**1. Pick the primary language**

On the **Voice** tab, set **Primary language** to the language most callers use, for example **Hindi**.

**2. Turn on auto switch**

Turn on **Auto switch language** so the assistant follows callers who change language mid-call.

**3. Choose a matching voice**

Pick a voice that speaks the language naturally. **Sarvam** (Bulbul v3) is designed for Indian languages; Cartesia also offers Indian voices. Click **Preview** to check.

**4. Translate the instructions**

On the **Prompt** tab, click **Translate prompt**. Orato rewrites your instructions in the native script with a natural spoken tone, keeps placeholders like `{customer_name}` intact, and preserves your sections.

**5. Check the transcriber**

Orato picks a transcriber from your languages. To force one, open **Advanced → Transcriber → Change** and choose **Sarvam AI** (Saaras v4 Realtime) for Indian languages or **Deepgram Flux Multilingual** for mixed-language calls.

**6. Consider the AI model**

Most models handle Hindi well. **Sarvam 105B** is built for Indian languages and is worth testing for regional-language calls.

## Tips for natural Indian-language calls

* Write instructions the way people actually speak on calls. Modern terms like "profile", "calendar", or "EMI" can stay in English or be transliterated.
* Tell the assistant how to handle Hinglish, for example `If the caller mixes Hindi and English, reply the same way.`
* Keep numbers simple. Ask the assistant to say amounts in lakhs and crores if that's what callers expect.
* Test with native speakers before launching a campaign.
